John August Spanagel, RPLS No. 4761, passed away much too soon in December 2018 at the age of 76 after being stricken with lung cancer. John was a proud, sole practitioner of professional land surveying in Alpine for many years and left his footsteps all across Brewster, Presidio and Jeff Davis Counties. In 2018, John went to work with Kleinman Consultants in Presidio, Texas. John is survived by his beloved wife Cindy, their children, grandchildren, extended family and many friends. A memorial service in John’s honor followed by a potluck reception will be held Saturday January 5th, 1:00 PM at the Davis Mountain Preserve on Highway 118, northwest of Ft. Davis, past the McDonald Observatory and about a quarter mile past the Lawrence E. Wood Picnic area.
I met John at a continuing ed. class in San Antonio a few years back. I don't know that I've ever come across a more kind, genuine, salt-of-the-earth man. I'm so very saddened to learn of his passing. Rest in peace, John.
