Waste Not, Want Not was the theme for this year's Future City Competition challenging students to design a Solid Waste Management System of the Future.  The Future City Competition is a national, project-based learning experience where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future. Keeping the engineering design process and project management front and center, students are asked to address an authentic, real-world question: How can we make the world a better place?

The regional competition was held in Houston, TX on January 16, 2016.  Thirty-one teams from Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Edinburg competed at this year's competition.  One Austin team, students from West Ridge Middle School, walked away with the Best Land Surveying Practices Award sponsored by NCEES.  In preparation for designing and building their model, the students interviewed Bill O'Hara, RPLS, LSLS to learn more about the profession.  Their efforts paid off - congratulations to all!
