Texas Was His Land
Pioneer Surveyor Willis Day Twichell
By Fred M. Truett
In the chronicles of the American West, little attention has been given to the hardy men who measured and marked the land- the surveyor.
W.D. Twichell, one of the most noted early surveyors in Texas, arrived on the arid Texas plains in 1885. This is an account of his work and life stemming largely from his letters and from interviews with surviving members of his family and others who knew him well.
