This presentation details the historical and contemporary developments of the horizontal and vertical geodetic datums of the United States including: the Bessel reference system, U.S. Standard Datum, North American Datum, North American Datum of 1927, North American Datum of 1983, First, Second, Third and Fourth General Vertical Adjustments, the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988. The program highlights changes in measurement and positioning technologies and their impact on the development of reference ellipsoids, geoid models and contemporary high accuracy reference frame enhancements. This session is designed to provide a foundation for other seminars that will focus on details, plans and programs of the 2022 reference system changes by the National Geodetic Survey.

Born out of the politics of the Mexican American war and cultural aspects of Manifest Destiny, the Southern Border has always been a topic of intrigue. This seminar will highlight the treaties that described the border sight unseen and the surveyors and the surveying that was required to make it work. Through the littorals of the Rio Grande River, to the setting of Monuments across some the most inhospitable land of the American Southwest. The attendees will obtain a further appreciation of following the footsteps. (4 PDHs)

Manuel Carrizales, RPLS, EIT, President/Project Surveyor Carrizales Land Surveying, LLCManuel Carrizales, Sr., RPLS, EIT, is owner of Carrizales Land Surveying, LLC based out of the Rio Grande Valley. He has been a registered professional land surveyor since 2012 and has worked in the civil and land development industry since 1997 as a drafting technician, field surveyor, engineer in training, surveyor in training, and as a registered surveyor. Mr. Carrizales has been involved with TSPS since 2007. He has been the Chapter 19 President for several years since then and has been recognized as TSPS Chapter President of the Year, 2013 and Young Surveyor of the Year, 2017. Mr. Carrizales currently serves on the Survey Advisory Committee to the TBPELS and is a veteran of the United States Army.
