This past Tuesday a 2 year Associates Degree in Surveying at North Lake College (NLC) was approved by the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) Board. The intent is for this program to be in place for the 2020 Fall semester, but one final step must be completed to be official. DCCCD will need this to be approved by the state Coordinating Board, by way of the Associate Vice Chancellor of Workforce Education’s office. While nothing is guaranteed, the expectation is that this should be approved.
This program would allow for Dallas/Fort Worth area students to pursue a 2 year Associates degree in Surveying. With high demand for surveying services and an increasingly aging existing profession, this is a great educational and career opportunity for aspiring surveyors. DCCCD will be able to leverage its relationship with area school districts to help spread the word to students about another career choice.
NLC currently offers a variety of college credit survey courses. John Pierce was instrumental in arranging for survey courses to be offered within DCCCD. Current adjunct instructors for the survey courses include Paul Hubert, Vas Kalogirou, Mickey Nowell, Jim Gillis, and Chris Freeman. The existing surveying program has been strongly supported by Chapters 5 and 2, as well as vendors such as Geomatic Resources, GeoShack, and WDS.
As of June 3, 2020 the AAS degree has been approved by the THECB (Texas Coordinating Board). It will go live for Fall 2020. Thanks to Lynne Smith-Brush, Interim Dean and Paul Kelemen, Executive Dean, along with the rest of the North Lake College staff who helped make this happen.
