Ray Arnold Ussery, RPLS #5311, 60, of Abilene, escaped the chains of this earth on Wednesday, August 09, 2017 at a local hospital. A Celebration of his Life will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Grover Nelson Park, 2070 Zoo Lane, in Abilene, directed by family. Arrangements for cremation were in care of Abilene Funeral Home.

Mr. Ussery was born December 18, 1956, in Abilene, Texas to Jesse and Rose Ussery. In 1975 he bequeathed his heart and soul to Susan Elizabeth English Edwards, loving life together for 42 years. Ray served honorably in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne out Fort Bragg, NC, joining in 1975 and graduating top of his class as Primary Non-Commissioned Officer, earning his E-5 stripes in two years and two months of service. Ray always excelled in all endeavors, working and studying long and hard to become a Registered Professional Land Surveyor of Texas in 1999. He surveyed alongside his mentor and friend Chester Jernigan. Ray leaves his survey marks all across Texas. He loved to note; "I've fallen out of more planes and helicopters than I've landed In." True Stuff!

His nephew Josh was one of his favorite people in the world. Josh loved helping Ray till the very end, their love for each other will live forever. Ray thought of Ryan Adames like a son and Kenneth Tessman like a brother from another mother. They are loved very much by Ray and Susan.
Ray had a love for all animals, especially birds. He also enjoyed looking at the stars and the heavens through his telescope. Now he can view the stars from a different angle.

Left to cherish his memories include his loving wife, Susan (who has been blessed to have him as a mate); Rebecca Dawn Ussery Mizikar and husband Michael III (whom he loved like a son); also helped raise his grandchild, Destiny Dawn Elizabeth Coomer Clem (Sean); his mother, Rose Marie Ussery; his brothers, Bret Alan Ussery (Ann), Kavin James Ussery, Chad Collin Ussery (Brandy), and Shane Scott Ussery (Crystal); his only sister, Vivian Marie Ussery; and lots and lots of nieces and nephews that he loved very much.

Mr. Ussery was preceded in death by his only son, Jesse Ray Walter Ussery; his father, Jesse Ray Ussery; and two brothers, Rory Shawn and Kyle Ross.

In Lieu of flowers, Ray would love donations to Rescue the Animals or The Salvation Army.

I met Ray some years back when I first attended State TSPS meetings. We kind of connected and enjoyed each other as some of the newbies. While I lost touch with him in recent years, I remember him as a gentle fellow and good man. Condolences to the family, God speed.
