Something to look forward to and remember fondly after its over. But like any travel experience, it is a good idea to make sure you give some thought and consideration to protecting yourself in the unlikely event that a problem does occur while on the ship or out of the country. PLEASE take a few moments to read the information shown below and anticipate your own needs. Being prepared can save you time and money. INSURANCE COVERAGE: A variety of insurance coverage is available to cruise ship travelers including trip cancellation/trip interruption, baggage loss or damage, and accident illness. Remember that while you are out of the country, YOUR OWN HOSPITALIZATION MAY NOT APPLY. Check on it now so you can arrange the proper coverage. MEDICARE: Take the time to read the small print on your passport. Youll find that the Medicare and similar government sponsored programs do not apply while traveling out of the country. Therefore, do not count on this coverage to protect you while on a foreign flag ship (and most are) or in a foreign port. This also applies to supplemental coverage. (The insurance program offered by the cruise company will provide medical coverage.) CONTRACT OF PASSAGE: Your cruise ship ticket usually spells out exactly what the limits of liability are for each cruise line. Please read this carefully and consider this when arranging baggage insurance or coverage for trip interruption/cancellation. Cruise lines quite regularly charge cancellation penalties EVEN WITH A MEDICAL EXCUSE. If you must be flown home from a distant port in the case of a medical or family emergency, most cruise lines will assist you only in making arrangements, but will incur no financial liability. There are programs that provide for cancellations and flights from a distant port. SAFETY AT SEA: As with an airline or any conveyance, please attend and heed all safety sessions such as boat drills. Please take special care to avoid slips and falls and injuring yourself on doors and windows. Due to nautical considerations, it is sometimes necessary to have raised doorsills and the like on a ship. Use special caution around these areas. SHORE EXCURSIONS: Before embarking on ANY shore excursions whether run by the cruise line or done on an independent basis, be certain that the operator is using well-maintained equipment and carries proper insurance. The cruise line usually has no control over independent tour operators working in many cruise ports. CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS: All U.S. and Canadian citizens need proof of citizenship when taking a cruise to Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, or Canada. If you plan to disembark the cruise, a passport is essential. For persons other than U.S. or Canadian citizens, a passport is required. If you are a legal resident, your Alien Registration Card (Green Card) is required for you to re-enter the U.S. Please notify Cruise Holidays of Austin immediately if you are a non-U.S. or Canadian citizen as Visas may be required. CUSTOMS: All baggage is subject to inspection by U.S. Customs upon return to the United States. Passengers originating or terminating their cruise in any foreign port will also be subject to Customs Inspections when embarking or disembarking. Under most circumstances upon return to the United States or Canada, passengers are allowed a specific duty-free exemption. Specific information can be obtained from any Customs office.
