Members Admire Work of Their
Surveying Forefathers
at UTA Exhibit
Chapter Two held its regular
monthly meeting on May 17th. After completing a meal,
members made their way to The University of Texas at Arlington
Library. There, members met Ms. Katherine R. Goodwin,
Cartographic Archivist of the
Virginia Garrett Cartographic History Library. The Library
houses maps documenting Texas history from the beginning of
European exploration to the present. Ms. Goodwin gave chapter
members a special closed door tour of the collection,
highlighting the history of surveying and mapping in the new
world, beginning with the first map depicting the land area that
became Texas, which is a hand drawn map dated 1540. Other
highlights of the collection included a map of the San Antonio
area made for Spain with measurement in, “mule/days”; a map made
for Stephen F. Austin’s colony; and a birds-eye view map of Fort
Worth; Members also enjoyed reviewing survey field notes prepared
in the 1830’s for the Land Commissioner of the Nacogdoches Land
District.
Chapter Two Members Brush Up
on First Aid Topics at April Meeting
A large number of chapter members turned out for the regular
April meeting. After completing chapter business and hearing
committee reports, members heard a very informative presentation
from Ms. Christyann
Tippens of the
Chisholm Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross on “First
Aid for the Field”. Ms. Tippins
covered many areas of interest to Surveyors including signs of
heat and cold related illnesses, as well as the dangers posed by
too much sun exposure, snakes and insects, and general first aid
tips.
March Meeting Helps Chapter Members Minimize Their
Liability in Construction Surveying
Chapter Two held its regular monthly meeting on March 15th
at Hoffbrau Steakhouse. Members heard from Mr. David J. Drez,
III, on, “Construction Surveying: Minimizing Your Liability”.
Mr. Drez is an attorney with
Haynes & Boone, L.L.P. of Fort Worth who practices in the
areas of business litigation and construction law. He is also an
adjunct professor of construction law at Texas Wesleyan
University School of Law. Mr. Drez
outlined liabilities Surveyors face and offered suggestions in
minimizing exposure to them.
Construction Surveying -
Minimizing Your Liability
It’s the phone
call every Surveyor dreads. The contractor just called saying
that something has been built in the wrong location on the
construction site. We all know what follows next: “The Big
Meeting”; which mainly boils down to a lot of finger-pointing
followed by the, “Blame Game”. Next comes the threat of lawsuits,
talk of huge damages and many a sleepless night for the Surveyor.
Our next chapter meeting will be March 15, 2004, at 6:30 p.m. at
Hoffbrau Steakhouse,
4613 Denton Highway, in Haltom City. Our speaker will be
David J. Drez, III, who will speak to us on, “Construction
Surveying: Minimizing Your Liability”. Mr. Drez is an
attorney with
Haynes & Boone, L.L.P. of Fort Worth. He practices in the
areas of business litigation and construction law. He is also an
adjunct professor of construction law at Texas Wesleyan
University School of Law. While attending this meeting won’t
guarantee you’ll never get one of, “those” calls, it will prepare
you better for dealing with those difficult situations in the
construction process.
