The
Texas Society of Professional Surveyors, Surveying Education of Texas,
and Tyler Junior College are organizing the 2nd Annual
High School Educator’s Retreat for Surveying, Mapping & Geospatial
Awareness, to be held June 11-13, 2008 on the campus of Tyler Junior
College in Tyler, Texas.
The purpose of the retreat is
to share with a select number of high school teachers, counselors, and
educators the professions of geospatial sciences and professional land
surveying in Texas. It has come to our attention that there are now a
few questions on the TEKS and TAKS tests that are related
to land surveying. Additionally, in 2006, the George W. Bush High
Growth Job Training Initiative identified the top 14 job sectors that
are expected to add substantial numbers of new jobs to our nation’s
economy. The Geospatial industry was rated among the top three. More
and more educators in K-12 programs across our nation are recognizing
the need to incorporate geospatial thinking in their curriculums.
We are asking that TSPS
Chapters spread the word to local teachers first and offer to sponsor
the $300 stipend. Individual companies are also welcome and
encouraged to select and sponsor teachers from their communities.
Registration for this event will begin around April 4th and will
be limited to the first 27 educators who sign-up. Initially, we
are limiting registration to first time participants. If we cannot fill
the 27 spots with new attendees, we will then open-up registration to
individuals who participated last year.
All attendees will be provided
a ditty bag with surveying related material to aid in classroom
instruction, posters and brochures promoting the industry, as well as
information that was presented during the retreat. There are also
several fun activities planned including; fish-fry social, catered
lunches, and a Geo-Caching treasure hunt. There is no cost for
attending the retreat and each participant will receive a $300 cash
stipend, to offset travel and lodging expenses, when they check-in
at the retreat. As a gift for participating in this year’s retreat
each attendee will receive a handheld GPS unit! In addition, this
retreat is in the process of being approved to offer CPE credits
to the educators.
Please make this announcement
at your next Chapter meeting. Initially, registration will be limited
to teachers contacted through TSPS, then if need be, information will be
sent to a listserve of high school math and science teachers across the
state and registration will be open to anyone. Remember that
registration is limited to the first 27 educators who sign up – so find
your teachers, raise your $300 stipend, and have them sign up as soon
as possible. Thank you for your support of this year’s retreat.
