Attendees will learn foundational
information about GIS, including:
- What is GIS?
- Common terms associated with GIS (metadata,
projection, point, line, polygon, attributes, coverage, tables)
- Common acronyms associated with GIS (DOQQ,
Tiger, AM/FM)
- Common GIS applications (urban planning &
development, law enforcement, 911, facilities management, flood plain management)
- The surveyor’s role in GIS
- Sources of GIS information

8 a.m.-12 p.m. -- Practical Application of Boundary Law – Bill O’Hara & Chris Holland
This course will instruct
attendees how to:
- Locate applicable statutory and case law regarding
boundary surveys in Texas
- Perform thorough and adequate research in determining
a boundary
- List resources for boundary law research
- Identify five things a surveyor must do in
the process of delineating a boundary
- Differentiate between matters of fact, matters
of professional opinion, and matters of law

In this course, surveyors
will be presented with topics on ethics and professionalism in business practices. Students will:
- Explore the impact of ethics on our profession
and our world.
- Study specific examples of how we can positively
impact our profession.
- Evaluate and determine routines and rituals
that will keep ethics at the forefront of decisions,
- Examine how our intention and execution of
thoughts before actions affects our ability to fully engage in an ethical and professional manner each day.

1 p.m.-5 p.m. -- Developing a Health & Safety Plan for Your Company – Richard Worthey (NEW COURSE!)
The key elements necessary
to an effective Health and Safety Plan will be outlined and explained in detail, as well as:
- OSHA requirements and application of Texas
Worker’s Compensation and what to expect if you are audited
- How to identify safety hazards that the surveyor
faces and develop procedures or methods to avoid or eliminate those hazards
- How to have fewer injuries, increased productivity,
increased employee morale, and reduced worker’s compensation insurance costs
- A basic Accident Prevention Plan template and
related documents in MS Word format ready for use in developing a customized company Health and Safety Plan

of land-based oil and gas surveying including:
- Surveying issues related to well staking and
easements

agencies involved within the oil & gas industry
- Surveying tasks encountered relative to the
completion of a project for the staking of wells, pipelines and other appurtenances

Attendees will learn how
to research TxDOT records and know the references required by TBPLS. Course topics include:
- History of TxDOT – events that established
the Texas Highway Department, function of the Department, the districts and entities within the Department
- TxDOT’s Resources Available to the Public
- Establishing a Right of Way as Adjoiner and
Referencing Deed Information

By this course’s end, attendees will be able to list the general processes of a construction project. They will
be able to:
- Read and check construction plans, and demonstrate the importance
of documentation – for calculations they make, for the checks they perform, and for the conversations and directives
they have with others
- Obtain and keep clear and complete records
- Archive the records for easy review
- Execute the field work

Data
collectors are the electronic field notebooks of the modern surveyor. Students will learn to:
- Collect data relevant to their particular type of survey and provide a more efficient
and consistent flow of information from the field to the office
- Increase efficiency and promote consistent data collection
- Reduce the number of errors and man hours necessary to achieve a more professional
survey product

This session is for those who want a better understanding of what’s going on inside
their COGO programs. The course includes:
- Basic overview of trigonometry, and the use
of the TBPLS approved hand-held calculators
- Traverse closure and area calculations, coordinate
calculations and inversing
- Line intersections and area partitioning problems
using basic trigonometry

AFTERNOON SESSIONS:
1 p.m.-5 p.m. -- Land Development Regulation– Jim Johnson (PE)
This course will take a look at the legal parameters in state and local regulation of development and infrastructure.
Specific topics to be covered are:
- Zoning & restrictive covenants
- Subdivision platting
- Right of way dedication
- Special use districts

1 p.m.-5 p.m. -- Applications & Limitations of LiDAR – Craig Glennie
LiDAR or Light Detection and Ranging is the integration of lasers, the Global Positioning System (GPS),
and Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) into a single system capable of acquiring data to produce accurate Digital
Elevation Models (DEMs). Students will learn how:
- Combined, they allow the positioning of the footprint of
a laser beam as it hits an object, to a high degree of accuracy
- Data collected with HDS (High Definition Surveying) formerly
known as Cyrax uses a eye-safe laser in an instrument that looks much like a conventional total station. The workshop
will conclude with an open discussion forum.

1 p.m.-5 p.m. -- Tree Identification – Shane Neally
Attendees will be bussed offsite for this course to:
- Identify trees in the field
- Learn how they grow
- Learn how they can be used by a client for a project
- How they can be preserved
- How they can assist in verifying/reconstructing original
points

This four-hour course will help prepare CST
candidates for their exam.

be awarded to attendees who sign-in 10 minutes after a session has begun. You may not attend portions of different
seminars during the same time slot. The maximum number of CEUs that can be earned at the TSPS Spring Symposium
is 16.
*PE* – PDHs for Engineers
(TBPE does not have a pre-approval process for courses that offer PDHs to engineers. TBPE allows 1 PDH per 1 contact
hour of instruction. All courses are subject to final acceptance from the TBPE upon submission of renewal)
*PP* – Paraprofessional Course (These
courses are designed specifically with the survey paraprofessional in mind and have not been appoved for CEUs by
TBPLS. No CEUs will be awarded for attending paraprofessional courses.)

In the event you decide to cancel your registration to this event, a full refund, less a $25 administration fee, will be made if written notice is received
by March 4, 2005. If you paid for
your registration with a credit card: Your written cancellation notice must include the credit card number and
expiration date of the card you used to register in order for a refund to be issued. Telephone cancellations will
not be accepted. No refunds after March 4, 2005. You must cancel your hotel reservations directly with the hotel.
