UNIVERSITY ADVISORY
DIVISION: EDUCATION DIVISION OFFICER: BUD THOMPSON
COMMITTEE: UNIVERSITY ADVISORY CHAIRMAN REPORTING: JOEY STANGER
I have reported earlier
this year on four of the surveying programs in Texas: Texas A & M at
Corpus Christi, Tyler Junior College, The University of Texas at Tyler and
the University of Houston. These surveying programs are alive and doing
well and all enjoy a high level of support from their local TSPS chapters
and other foundations. The total number of students in these programs as
stated in earlier reports is approximately 180.
There are also other
programs around the state offering surveying degrees or surveying related
degrees. We currently are listing on the TSPS web site surveying programs
at the above colleges and additionally at San Jacinto College, Houston
Community College System, Austin Community College, Texas State Technical
College and San Antonio College. I do not have an accurate count of
students in this last group of colleges so if anyone is familiar with one
of these programs please let me know. I would also ask if anyone knows of
any other programs offering surveying courses to also give me a call or
email.
I have at times had
difficulty making contact with some of the surveying programs. I have no
trouble with the programs where I personally know some of the surveyors
actively involved with the local college. I think a goal for this
committee next year should be to identify a TSPS member to be a liaison
with each surveying program. This will facilitate information exchange
from the colleges to the university committee chair. They could identify
some of the areas that TSPS can help their program and the committee chair
could more easily assimilate important information to report to the TSPS
Board of Directors.
I want to thank those who
helped provide information to this committee this year. I have enjoyed
serving this year and will close this report by again encouraging all
members to actively support the colleges offering surveying degree
programs. We need to recruit students to our profession. The demands on
qualified personnel are at an all time high from my perspective so
surveying should be an easy sale to students looking for a challenging and
very rewarding career. Let’s get the word out!
Regards,
Joey Stanger, Committee
Chair
