CHAPTER ACTIVITIES A few
chapters have been working hard this year and from their reports have had much
success promoting surveying through Surveyors Week. It
appears that with the help of our Area representative David McDow, we have
opened dialogue with Chapter 15. We hope that in the near future to set up a
meeting with the surveyors of that area and help them regain active status. We are
working on a Chapter Presidents Handbook that hopefully will be ready to use at
the October meeting. I am still looking for information from each committee to
be placed in the Handbook. The information should contain the committee’s
primary duty and if you have a need for additional members. Please remember
that this is going to incoming Chapter presidents that may have little or no
knowledge of TSPS or its committees. This can be used as a great tool to
recruit these members into your committee. Other
topics that may be of interest to the chapters are always welcome.

PUBLIC
RELATIONS Committee Charge: § Represent TSPS before the public, other associations, and civic groups. § Coordinate with TSPS leadership to conduct publicity campaigns through newspapers and various other media to inform the public about the surveying profession and how TSPS can better serve them. § Work with chapters to develop public relations programs and help with the materials. § Work with allied professionals to improve understanding of the surveying profession and to determine areas of cooperation. § Develop a “Landowner’s Guide to Surveying” for use by TSPS members. § Work in conjunction with the Safety Committee to help promote the importance of safety for surveyors. § Work in conjunction with the University Advisory Committee to accomplish the following goal:
Goal created during 2007 Strategic Planning Session Goal: Take a TSPS surveying presentation to one high school by August 2008 Rationale: -Recruitment tool for the surveying profession -We need to reach out to new audiences Strategic Measures: -Determine a high school -Maintain contacts through and after presentation
The committee met briefly prior to the last board meeting to discuss some of these goals. However, no activity has taken place since that time due to current business time constraints. It is my intent to conduct conference call meeting with committee members at a future time to discuss further action.

Other Reports PRESIDENTIAL REPORT
For National & Texas Surveyors Week in March, I challenged the chapters to establish some type of public awareness and/or educational event. I have seen the reports for some of those events and look forward to hearing about what some of the other Chapters did for the occasion. Any chance we get to help educate the public on what we do as surveyors is another step forward for our profession and I would like to thank all of you for your efforts.
Since the last board meeting, I have been quite busy traveling around the state as well as beginning a new job here in Austin. In February I had the opportunity to visit Chapter 5, in Dallas and Chapter 19, Rio Grande Valley in Harlingen. In March I attended the ACSM/NSPS Annual Meeting in Spokane, Washington, and attended a joint meeting with Chapter 9, Gulf Coast Chapter and Chapter 6, Deep East Texas Chapter in Winnie. In April I attended a Chapter 2, North Central Texas Chapter picnic that was held in Arlington. They held a silent auction to raise monies for educational initiatives. On May 8 I will be attending a dinner meeting with the members of Chapter 10, Permian Basin in Midland, and on May 21st I will be attending a joint meeting with Chapter 1, South Plains and Chapter 16, Panhandle in Plainview which is between Lubbock and Amarillo. Chapter 16 has been struggling but they have some members who are working very hard to get active again. I wish to thank Craig Alderman who is helping with that effort. We are also in the process of scheduling a meeting with the surveyors in the Kerrville area (Chapter 15, which has been nonexistent for quite some time now) to begin discussions on revamping that Chapter. They apparently have an issue with a portion of the TSPS Manual of Practice and have used that as a reason to refrain from becoming members of TSPS. I hope through better communication we can change their minds and get them involved again. I wish to thank David McDow, Capital Area Chapter President and Central Texas Area Representative who has been instrumental in trying to arrange that meeting.
I will be attending the 2nd Annual Teachers Retreat in Tyler in June and I look forward to meeting those teachers and witnessing the enthusiasm and successes that the event will likely generate.
