ONLINE/DISTANCE LEARNING

Presidential Charge:

On-line/Distance Learning Subcommittee- Bud Thompson, Chair   Prepare, schedule and organize subcommittee meetings.   Prepare and submit committee reports to the Education Committee chair in time to be included in the quarterly board books. Research and review existing on-line courses offered by other organizations.   Participate in at least one on-line course available from a recognized and accredited program this year. Create and develop a comprehensive plan to provide web-based, correspondence, and video conferencing TSPS courses.  Work with the Course Development & Speaker Development Subcommittee to help pinpoint which existing TSPS classes would be best for this type of media.

Goal created during 2007 Strategic Planning Session

Goal:  Take one existing course and make it available in an on-line (web    based) format by August 2008 Board of Directors Meeting.

Rationale:
-We are in an on-line society

-This will prove (beta test) that TSPS can do this with education offerings

-TSPS currently has the capabilities, technological and logistical ability to do this

-There is a need

Strategic Measures:

-Choose the course

     -Choose the medium

     -Test

     -Launch

     -Obtain feedback

The chairman has participated in a limited capacity in an online course. No real progress has been made in this quarter. We have contacted one company that markets a web seminar product and have reviewed one taped eight-hour seminar from the Symposium in San Antonio for key points and reference. After several meetings using GoToMeeting, I believe it will be very helpful in the production of an online class.

Respectfully submitted,

Bud Thompson

SEMINAR & SYMPOSIUM SUBCOMMITTEE

SubCommittee Mandate: Prepare, schedule and organize subcommittee meetings.  Prepare and submit committee reports to the Education Committee chair in time to be included in the quarterly board books.  Plan and organize the TSPS seminar offerings for both CEU’s and paraprofessionals in accordance with the TSPS professional development curriculum categories.  Plan and organize the symposium for this year and for the near future.  Provide suggestions for future seminar offerings in coordination with the Course Development & Speaker Development Subcommittee.  Work with TSPS staff members to work out logistics for the seminars and symposiums.  Help seek local volunteers for both the seminars and symposium.  Work with TSPS staff members to insure that any scheduled seminars are listed on the TSPS website.  Coordinate with the On-line/Distance Learning Subcommittee to offer on-line courses.

A well attended and successful 2008 Symposium was held at the Radisson Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio February 22 and 23. In attendance were 310 taking classes plus 6 staff, 15 speakers, 3 observers and about 6 volunteers.

In addition, the Heart of Texas Boundary Retracement Seminar was held March 20-22 in Brady with 18 in attendance.

Jack Avis will be presenting a seminar June 7th  for Chapter 19 in Harlingen entitled “Implementing GIS In a Surveying Environment”.

There are 3 additional TSPS sponsored educational seminars planned for 2008, in addition to those held in conjunction with our Convention on the High Seas.

Symposium 2009 will be held in Waco, in March, and plans are well underway for this event.

We have drafted a policy to deal with Compensation for Seminar Speakers, and this attachment is respectfully submitted herewith for consideration by the Board of Directors.

This subcommittee has met once since the last board meeting, using GOTOMEETING.COM. This seemed to work well.

Respectfully Submitted by:

Jim Gillis, Chair

SKILLS USA

Education Committee – Bud Thompson, Chair   Prepare, schedule and organize education committee meetings and events in conjunction with the education subcommittees.  Gather reports from the subcommittees and prepare a summary report to be included in the quarterly board books.  Provide support for all subcommittees.  Support educational efforts that improve public awareness of the surveying profession.

Skills USA Program Subcommittee - Bill Coleman, Chair   Prepare, schedule and organize subcommittee meetings.  Prepare and submit committee reports to the Education Committee chair in time to be included in the quarterly board books.  Foster relationships with Texas Skills USA leaders to help promote the surveying profession.  Keep the TSPS board of directors updated on the Duncanville ISD high school surveying program and any other new Skills USA programs that may commence in Texas.  Work in conjunction with the TSPS leadership and Public Relations Committee to ensure that the student competitions are publicized in the TSPS and local publications.

For Meeting May 17, 2008, 8:00 a.m.:

There are some common house keeping items I would like to take care of at the start of each subcommittee report. Keep it simple and move the meeting along.

1.      Read the charge from the President for your subcommittee, aloud.

2.      State your progress to date to meet the charge.

Since the Feb Board meeting this sub committee has overseen SkillsUSA district Surveying contests across the state.  In March there was a technical committee meeting for establishing rules for the State Surveying Contest in Corpus Christi.  During April this sub-committee conducted, with only the assistance of two TAMU-CC students and Michael McGiness, RPLS, the State Surveying Contest comprised of ten teams with 27 students from six different schools.

We are now in the process of planning two events for the SkillsUSA Nationals   to be held in Kansas City, Mo. June 23-27, 2008.

There is an article in the current issue of POB magazine which outlines what we in Texas have been accomplishing for surveying in high school and SkillsUSA.

3.      State what remains to meet your charge.

Continue on to Kansas City, enlisting support where it can be found.

Develop a curriculum plan to assist teachers with preparation for next year’s contest

Have the plan ready to distribute by August.

4.      State your plan to meet the charge and the help you will need from the committee to meet the charge.

I have enlisted the aid of Joey Stanger, John Pierce, Pat Smith, and Chapters 2, 5 and 9.

We will request specific action from the TSPS Board at the next meeting.

5.      Stay focused on the charge and goals.

6.      Stick to new items. There is no need to rehash what we have already heard as to events, unless there has been progress towards a specific goal.

Try not to get distracted by other issues or priorities. Take your assignments from the Presidential charge and Education Committee Chairman. Your first Priority is the Presidential Charge.

TRIG*STAR

Participation in Trig*Star this year has increased and has been very positive.  At this time Chapters are still conducting their regional testing.  This testing will conclude the first week of May.  During the second week of May we will conduct the State Exam and our State Winner will be declared at the Board Meeting on May 17th

Respectively Submitted,

John F. Watson, RPLS

Trig Star Chairman

UNIVERSITY ADVISORY

On March 28, 2008 we had a planning meeting on the campus of Tyler Junior College to continuing planning for the next Teacher Retreat to be held June 11-13 in Tyler.  We have developed our agenda and have a list of speakers for the retreat.  The 9th annual Surveying Summer Camp for high school students will also be held the same week. The survey camp will begin on Sunday June 8th and will overlap the Retreat by one day.  This will allow us to have some joint programs and interaction between the teachers and high school students.  I want to thank those in attendance for another great planning meeting.

It was decided that next year the retreat will be held in the Houston area.  Roger McDonald will chair this committee next year so I want to encourage everyone to give him a lot of support.

As of today (4-21-08) we have 25 teachers registered for the retreat and we have set the maximum attendance at 36.

Respectfully submitted,

Joey Stanger, Chairman
