TECHNOLOGY

Presidential Charge:

Prepare, schedule and organize committee meetings.   Prepare and submit committee reports in time to be included in the quarterly board books.  Analyze the current server restraints and assess the needs for upgrading.

Division Charge:
To review existing computer equipment including server(s), workstations, network components and software and make recommendations and budget cost for improvements and upgrades consistent with planned growth in providing online access to educational courses, as well as provide better communication between staff, board members, committees and membership.

This committee has not met physically this quarter but has met through GoToMeeting (GTM). The Technology Committee “Go To Meeting” was held and resolved that the budget could not afford a technology upgrade for TSPS Staff for fiscal year 2008-2009 prior. However, I have since learned that the TSPS Staff has purchased new computers through R.T. Global. This upgrade did not originate with the Technology Committee.

Technology committee has spent the allotted funds for establishing a domain name and hosting service for the TSPS-EDU.ORG and the Moodle Service. The Moodle service site is up and running on a Dell Server housed at Thompson Surveying Company in Houston and is protected by a Firewall and Symantec Endpoint Protection, presently cost free and in the testing mode until June 15, 2009. Education Sub-Committee chairs have been issued logons and passwords to the site to experiment during the testing phase. Either training or Moodle Manuals would increase the use by the sub-committee chairs. The site can be visited at IP 75.148.181.83.

It is recommended to purchase two (2) books for each developer and subcommittee chair that plans on developing courseware. The cost per set of books is $80.00 plus shipping. The books are:

Moodle E-Learning Course Development by William H. Rice IV(ISBN 1-904811-29-9)

And Using Moodle 2nd Edition by Jason Cole & Helen Foster (ISBN 13:978-0-596-52918-5). At the least, one set should be purchased for the other member of the Committee, Jim Sullivan.

Respectfully submitted,

Bud Thompson
