CHAPTER ACTIVITIES Some of
the chapters are off to a good start this year. Chapter Activities topics
scheduled for discussion this year include:
Surveyors Week - Chapters are beginning to work with their local libraries for
surveying displays. They are also working with their local schools to present
surveying presentations and Surveyor of the Day Programs.
Education - Chapter Activities will work with the Education Committee to help
with the creation of new topics and seminars.
Membership - We are promoting new and creative ways to bring in new members. We
will work with the chapters having them target employees of surveying firms for
possible membership. We are also promoting a goal of 100% membership of all non
TSPS Registered
Professional
Land Surveyors. Chapter members will be encouraged to find a non - TSPS
Surveyor in their area to take to lunch or coffee and discuss the benefits of
becoming a TSPS Member.
Trig-Star – We will be encouraging all chapters to get involved with Trig-Star. Other
topics that may be of interest to the chapters are always welcome.

Newly elected Second Vice President, Jon Hodde, was appointed to the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying in December. I offer my congratulations to Jon in this very honorable position. As much as I hate to lose Jon’s experience and commitment as Second Vice President of TSPS, I know that he will do well in serving the surveying profession in his new endeavor. In accordance with the TSPS Constitution, the TSPS Board of Directors is tasked with appointing a Second Vice President to carry out the unexpired term. The Board members submitted nominees to the Nominations Committee Chairperson, each of the four (4) candidates were interviewed and consented to run. A special ballot was then e-mailed out to the Board members with instructions to e-mail or fax their signed ballots to the Tellers Committee Chair. The newly elected Second Vice President, John F. Watson, was announced in January and will be officially installed at the first quarterly board meeting.
In December, I had the opportunity to visit Chapter 8, Central East Texas and Chapter 22, Chaparral for the Christmas dinner meetings. Thanks to all of those chapter members for the wonderful hospitality and good food. It is a pleasure to get to know more grassroots members across the State and I have vowed to learn something new about each community that I visit. I am looking forward to my next scheduled visits to Chapter 4, East Texas on January 17 and Chapters 5, Dallas and 19, Rio Grande Valley in February.
I will be attending the ACSM/NSPS Annual Meeting in Spokane, Washington during the first week in March. This year’s meeting is a Joint Conference between ACSM & the Land Surveyor’s Association of Washington.
In alignment with my main goal of “Advancing the mission through public awareness and education”, I am challenging each Chapter to establish some type of public awareness/educational event for National Surveyors Week, which is March 16-22. This could be anything from an article in the local newspaper to a career fair type project. The NSPS website has a great Surveyors Week Publicity Handbook that is a great planning tool for the events. www.nspsmo.org. I will be following up with the Chapter Presidents to inquire about the plans in their area.
