EDUCATION

ONLINE/DISTANCE LEARNING

The Online/Distance Learning Committee consists of Bud Thompson, Chairman and Sally Staut. The committee met informally together with Education Committee on October 27, 2007.  We are currently looking at outsourcing part or all of the web-casting portion of the process. Once all figures and facts have been gathered and organized the committee will report findings to the board for consideration.

There will be further developments once all facts and figures are compiled.

Respectfully,

Bud Thompson, Chairman

SEMINAR & SYMPOSIUM SUBCOMMITTEE

COMMITTEE MEMBERS: Jim Gillis, Chester Varner

SubCommittee Mandate: Prepare, schedule and organize subcommittee meetings.  Prepare and submit committee reports to the Education Committee chair in time to be included in the quarterly board books.  Plan and organize the TSPS seminar offerings for both CEU’s and paraprofessionals in accordance with the TSPS professional development curriculum categories.  Plan and organize the symposium for this year and for the near future.  Provide suggestions for future seminar offerings in coordination with the Course Development & Speaker Development Subcommittee.  Work with TSPS staff members to work out logistics for the seminars and symposiums.  Help seek local volunteers for both the seminars and symposium.  Work with TSPS staff members to insure that any scheduled seminars are listed on the TSPS website.  Coordinate with the On-line/Distance Learning Subcommittee to offer on-line courses.

As with the other subcommittees of the Education Committee, we are newly formed and are just getting going.

In terms of what has transpired since the TSPS annual meeting in October, we have successfully conducted two eight hour seminars in December. The first was conducted by Ken Gold in Irving on December 1, 2007 entitled TBPLS: P and TS, with approximately 50 attendees, and the second was conducted by Jim Gillis in Austin December 8, 2007 entitled GNSS, Geodesy and Map Projections for Texas Land Surveyors, with approximately 100 attendees.

The 2008 Symposium will be held at the Radisson Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio February 22 and 23.

There are 4 additional educational seminars planned for 2008.

The following items are those which this subcommittee plans to work on over the next year;

  • A review of our seminar offerings for both CEU’s and paraprofessionals

  • A policy to standardize payment for our seminar instructors

  • Plans for Symposium 2009

TRIG*STAR

I have received the 2008 regional test from NSPS and I have prepared our 2008 packet.  I was able to get the packet distributed much earlier this year in hopes of a greater turnout statewide.  All the chapters have the packet.  I have had some isolated teachers contact me about the program and I have referred them to their respected local chapters.   Hopefully we will gain some new students and teachers.

I am seeking input for our State Exam as we need to create a new one this year.  We have exhausted our problem bank so if anyone is willing to help with creating new problems please contact me at jwatson@windearthwater.com.

Respectively Submitted,

John F. Watson, RPLS

UNIVERSITY ADVISORY

On December 12, 2007 we had a planning meeting on the campus of Tyler Junior College.  This was the initial planning meeting for the next Teacher Retreat to be held June 11-13 in Tyler.  Many good ideas were discussed and we began working out the agenda for the retreat. We are especially excited that it will overlap the Surveying Summer Camp for high school students by one day as the survey camp will be held June 8-11.  This will allow us to have some joint programs and interaction between the teachers and high school students.  Those in attendance at the planning session were:  Patti Williams, Willace Johnson, Shane Neally, Dempsey Hannah, Bill Coleman, Jack Ward, Art Osborn, Wesley Turley, Kevin Kilgore and me.  I want to thank those in attendance for the great start in planning the next retreat.

We will be in need of presenters again this year so if you know of someone interested in helping out please get them in contact with me.

Respectfully submitted,

Joey Stanger, Chairman
