James will be presenting
the CST seminar in the new format created by TSPS over the past year as

EDUCATION
Activities since the last
General Membership Meeting in October 2006 include:
-
The 2007 Symposium will
be held at the Sheraton Beach Hotel on South Padre Island, Texas on Feb.
23 and 24, bringing yet another educational meeting to deep South
Texas.
-
Scheduling for the
Course Development Workshop (CDW) 2007 is being refined. We are
offering a Chapter Challenge to localize the teams, get more chapter
activity in education, and provide more course content available at the
chapter level. We expect to complete the roster at the Board Meeting
and present to the Board.
-
Scheduling and
development for the 2007 Speaker Development Workshop (SDW) is
anticipated in coordination with the CDW 2007.
-
Both December CEU
seminars were well received and attended.
-
The two three-day
Retracement Seminars, “Heart of Texas, in Brady March 29-31 and the
“Locating Original Corners Seminar” in Concan, Sept. 13-15, 2007 are
scheduled. These two courses must be retained and refined as part of the
TSPS master education plan.
-
Several dates and
location for CST exams have been placed on the TSPS calendar. CST
preparation course are being developed and given whenever possible. Our
goal is to enlist more help from the chapter level about coordinating
exam dates.
-
The joint seminar with
TLTA for is rescheduled for March 1, 2007 at the same hotel. The
meeting spawned an awesome endeavor that should facilitate better
communication between the Title industry and the Surveying industry. It
was amazing how leaders in both industries, having worked with each
other for decades, still did not know the basics of what was important
to the other. In view of the changes on the horizon, this will be a
notable event.
-
In cooperation with the
University Advisory Committee, a Survey Camp for High School teachers is
being planned with TAMU-CC for next June. (See Joey Stanger’s report)
-
Recruitment in high
schools and below is being pursued. We are beginning to look at
educating all areas of the public about the benefits of good,
old-fashioned surveying with awesome, up-to-date technology.
-
The relationship of GIS
and surveying is being studied. Ways of combining the similar and
separating the different aspects of each is being developed. TSPS has
one GIS course and is developing a second during CDW 2007.
Additionally, by the
board meeting we should have a voting roster for the rest of the year.
Our plan, as discussed at the Leadership Retreat, is to put a little
structure into the Education Committee. Electing a Vice Chair, having a
voting roster and then as many ex-officio members as necessary, and
assigning sub-committees are a few of the suggested changes. I am looking
forward to seeing everyone in Austin on Feb. 11 as I will be returning
from a week in Cabo.
Respectfully submitted,

TRIG*STAR
I have received the 2007
regional test and packet from NSPS and I have prepared our 2007 packet.
To date I have distributed ten copies of the packets across the state. I
have renewed enthusiasm from several chapters. In fact several chapters
have come to me with new ideas for their chapter. I am looking forward to
another good year. If any one else would like a packet please do not
hesitate to contact me. The chapter winners do not have to be designated
until the first week of May.
Respectively Submitted,
John F.

UNIVERSITY ADVISORY
Below is a report summary
of our committee meeting last October. We had a great meeting with 14
members in attendance.
October 16, 2006
University Advisory
Committee Members:
I really appreciate
everyone’s attendance at the meeting in The Woodlands. I think it was
very productive with great input from all in attendance.
I would like to give a
brief review of the items discussed. Please review for accuracy and feel
free to add additional comments.
1) Title of Retreat:
High School Educator’s Retreat for Surveying, Mapping and Geospatial
Science Awareness.
2) Decision was made to
invite 30 educators with a target of 25 in attendance.
3) The first retreat
will be held on or about June 10-13, 2007 and will be hosted by Texas A &
M University at Corpus Christi.
4) The camp will include
two nights with a day and ½ of instruction.
5) Dr. Lyle will review
and revise the proposed itinerary for the camp. The group indicated that
we may need to focus in a few areas: a) develop practical problems
related to surveying and geomatics that also cover the learning objectives
of high school students, b) have a series of short programs with dynamic
speakers to highlight modern technology and the many different exciting
and rewarding fields in surveying and c) present information showing the
educational opportunities for the profession around the state along with
scholarship availability.
6) Dr. Jeffress and or
Dr. Lyle will develop some cost estimates for a per attendee cost so that
our committee may make a budget request to TSPS to help support the camp.
7) It was decided that
attendees will be given a stipend in an amount to be decided to be applied
to room and board of their choice. Lodging will be made available at
college dorms or they can choose their own lodging.
8) Attendees will be
provided a ditty bag of related items some of which may aid in class room
instruction (measuring tape, scale, etc…).
9) An online brochure
needs to be developed ASAP so that the retreat can be advertised for next
summer. (I am assuming that TAMCC will develop this but let the committee
know if our input is needed)
10) Develop a poster
that can be used to promote surveying and that could be hung in class
rooms. If I remember correctly Bud Thompson was to ask Doug Loveday if he
could help in this endeavor.
11) Not discussed in the
meeting but I think we need to get the Trig Star Committee involved to
present information to the educators on their program.
12) Of the target
audience of educators I think we should also include drafting and or CADD
programs. We have had several surveying students over the years that had
CADD courses in high school.
13) We need to develop a
review questionnaire for the educators to complete at the end of the
retreat to get their input for how we may be able to improve future
retreats.
I am open to any other
suggestions so feel free to let me know any other ideas.
Regards,
Joey Stanger, Committee
Chair
