ANNUAL MEETING

The Annual Meeting Committee met two times this quarter and continues to make great progress toward making the 2009 Convention a success. The theme for this year is: "Austin 2.0". We are on Texas Land Commissioner, Jerry Patterson's calendar to be Thursday's Keynote Speaker and are still checking on Kirk Watson's availability for Friday's luncheon address. We have Jim Comer that is willing to be a contingent speaker if we cannot contact Kirk Watson for Friday's presentation. We have commitments from all of the presenters for the concurrent sessions and have also scheduled their speaking times and dates. The Golf tournament has been reserved and is set for Wednesday at Avery Ranch. The contract for the Skeet Shoot at Capital Area Gun Club has been finalized and will include sporting clays and lunch with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes. The entertainment and location for Friday night's social event is booked. We are still concentrating our efforts toward sponsorship of the Annual Meeting, securing vendors, and amassing the many volunteers necessary for the Meeting to function properly. TSPSA has scheduled a Wednesday Reception; Thursday wine tasting; arts and crafts, and CPR and first aid; and Saturday being the annual meeting.

SKILLSUSA

Committee Charge: Prepare, schedule and organize subcommittee meetings.  Prepare and submit committee reports to the Education Committee chair in time to be included in the quarterly board books.  Foster relationships with Texas Skills USA leaders to help promote the surveying profession.  Communicate with any SkillsUSA high school programs and encourage new programs. Develop a basic curriculum for high school SkillsUSA Surveying Programs, emphasizing math, science and history skills as they relate to surveying. Keep the TSPS board of directors updated on the high school surveying programs and any other new Skills USA programs that may commence in Texas.  Per the February 7, 2009 Motion: Keep the TSPS Board of Directors aware of the status of funding for SkillsUSA programs and the matching funds allocations. Work in conjunction with the TSPS leadership and Public Relations Committee to ensure that the student competitions and SkillsUSA/Chapter activities are publicized in the TSPS and local publications.

Activity:
Since the last board meeting this committee has been working on creating a basic curriculum for the high school surveying programs.  We have conversed through e-mail and we plan on finalizing the curriculum by August 15th in order for all schools to have access to it before the school year begins.  The committee spent the first part of the year on preparing for the state contest and since then we have worked on developing the curriculum.  I believe that the state contest worked well and I hope that the curriculum meets with the same kind of success.  The committee hopes to be able to work on the Public Relations portion of the charge in the future along with possibly developing a partnership with one of the survey scholarship programs so that we can expand the rewards and the program itself.  We feel that having a defined curriculum that all schools and mentors can work off of will lower the barriers that some programs see and hopefully encourage more schools and chapters to take up the program.

Respectfully submitted,

Sub-Committee Chair

TRIG*STAR

This committee has not been active for the last quarter with all of our activity occurring previously.  The only news we have to is that Anthony Pabillano was this year’s second place national winner.  NSPS would like to do the presentation a bit different this year.  They would like to arrange for Anthony and his teacher to have their prizes awarded during the TSPS conference.  Their President, John Matonich, will be attending and he could certainly present the award along with TSPS.  Since I will not be continuing as committee chair I believe that the new committee chair should help present this award and interact with the national level people.

UNIVERSITY ADVISORY

The third annual High School Educators Retreat, held this year at LSC-Montgomery seemed to be a smashing success.  We have received some very positive feedback from a number of the attendees and I have received several contacts from teachers who heard about the retreat too late to sign up this year inquiring whether there will be another one in the future.  We had a total of 38 high school teachers attend this year’s retreat and we had another 12 teachers on the waiting list in case any of the first 38 was unable to attend.  This gives us a starting point for possible attendees for next year.

I was very surprised by the demographics of the attendees.  Of the 38 attendees, 19 were from the chapter 9 area and the remaining 19 were from other chapter areas across the state.  We had a number of attendees from as far away as Dallas, San Antonio and Corpus Christi as well as some cities in between.  The point I am making is that this event is becoming better known and we can count on drawing attendees from larger areas.

By the last count, we were able to raise $11,299.31 in sponsorship money which almost covered our projected budget of $11,928.68.  Rather than recite the names of the very generous sponsors in this report I will attach a copy of the spreadsheet to this report so that all of the sponsors can be identified.

We will probably be selecting a site for the 2010 High School Educators Retreat at the August meeting and at this time it looks like that may be in the Dallas area unless another group comes forward.  I do believe that the Educators Retreat is a very valuable tool in reaching potential land surveying students and future land surveyors through the high school teachers that have very close contact with them at a formative stage in their lives.

In view of my health issues that have prevented my traveling to Austin throughout this year and my busy teaching schedule, I believe that it would be a good thing for the upcoming President to appoint a replacement to chair the University Advisory Committee next year.  I would like to remain on the committee, but I do not think that I will be able to chair the committee again.
