Program Speaker was Chapter member Wayne Terry, LSLS, RPLS, who entertained attendees with tales about a survey project in the mid 80s in which he profiled a utility line between Chicago and Dallas utilizing an altimeter. Chapter 5 also introduced and recognized the recently licensed RPLS and certified SITs in attendance. --Members were updated on state level issues/priorities/news from the June 9th TSPS Board Meeting; committee reports were given; a reminder of the 2007 Convention in Arlington and the need for volunteers; and future Chapter 5 activities and meeting programs were discussed. -- SURPAC donations of $97 were collected, and Winkelmann & Associates donated 4 Frisco Rough Rider tickets for a raffle that netted $50 to the General Fund. July Chapter Meeting held 7/10. -- 50+ attendees at the Cantina Laredo Restaurant in Dallas. Program Speaker was Chapter member John Pierce, RPLS, who spoke on the NSPS Certified Survey Technician program. --Attendees were shown the 2 Survey Videos recently produced by the TSPS Public Relations Committee. -- Chapter 5 invited the Chapter Trig Star winning students and their teachers to the meeting. They were treated to dinner, recognized, and presented their winning monetary awards. -- SURPAC collections at the Meeting totaled $182. -- Special Guest in attendance was Richard Worthey, RPLS, and Chairman of the TSPS Public Relations Committee, who briefed attendees on PR activities. -- Members were also informed that Duncanville High School wants to create a 2 year Survey program, and TSPS has been asked for input and assistance with the undertaking. 3 students and a Faculty advisor presented information to the audience about their successful engineering program, and their hopes for the surveying program. SPECIAL EVENTS: --Chapter 5 held the 8th Annual Tim Mireur Memorial Golf Tournament on June 2nd, with over 100 golfers participating. Sean Flaherty organized the event. PUBLIC RELATIONS Continued involvement with the geocache nation. Chapter 5 is actively placing monuments and caches, exposing participants to TSPS and Professional Surveyors. This has proven to be a fun activity with huge potential PR benefits. More effort is on the horizon. Charlie Redd, RPLS, is guiding the Chapter. Monument #5 was given to Michael Evans, who has secured permission to place the monument near the Erath statue at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame Museum in Waco. EXECUTIVE BOARD Ballots are being prepared to send to members, and results should be known by the scheduled August 14th Chapter Meeting. EDUCATION John Pierce, RPLS, continues to spearhead efforts on the establishment of a 2 Year Survey Program at North Lake College (Dallas County Community College District). The upstart program should be official by January 2008. There have also been preliminary discussions with the University of North Texas about involvement with the 2 year survey program For the Fall 2007 semester, Chris Freeman will again teach SRVY 1301, Intro to Surveying; John Pierce is teaching a new course offering, SRVY 2343, Surveying Legal Principals II; and Colin Henry will teach SRVY 1309, Surveying Measurements, and SRVY 1315 Survey Calculations will be taught by Felipe de la Garza. In addition, Paul Hubert, John Pierce, Colin Henry, and Chris Freeman are all members of the North Texas Construction Education Foundation Advisory Council. Monthly Advisory Council meetings are regularly attended by these four Chapter 5 members. Chapter 5 members/Survey Instructors (Paul Hubert, John Pierce, and Chris Freeman) were invited by the Construction Education Foundation to a dinner and Graduation ceremony for North Lake College on June 28th. Jason Jernigan, SIT, is spearheading a local SIT/RPLS exam Study Group. The group is growing in numbers, and feedback from participants has been quite positive. Chapter 5 offers the Group RPLS/LSLS upon request. OTHER Several Chapter members serving on the 2007 Convention Committee met on June 6th in Arlington to continue planning for the Annual Convention to be held in October. The Dallas and Ft. Worth Chapters are co-hosting the event. Chapter 5 members on the Committee and present at the meetings included Chairman Scott Posey, Wayne Terry, Paul Mannel, and Chris Freeman. Sean Flaherty is also serving on the Committee, and is organizing the Convention Golf Tournament. The final scheduled meeting will be on Saturday August 11th in Kerrville, prior to the TSPS Board Meeting. Chapter 5 members attending the TSPS Board of Directors Meeting in Austin on June 9th included John Pierce, Charlie Holland, Jason Jernigan, Robert Schneeberg, and Chris Freeman. They also attended the Annual Ray Wisdom Auction, presenting several items donated by Chapter 5.
